Driving Roads

Everyone loves a good driving road, right? Well here are some gems that I have stumbled across on my travels. The list is rather small at the moment but I'm sure it will grow after time!

I stumbled upon this road after a bad game of football I played in the the area. I entered the road from the north side (Send Road) and at first it just seemed like a normal residential road. But as I passed the roadworks the road opened out and I saw the hallowed national speed limit sign.

The road has some lovely sweeping ends but please use caution as they do narrow. This road was such a pleasant surprised that I turned around at the end and did it the other way!

This is a well known road and as a result you will not build much speed. It very popular with cyclist so please watch out for them! I added this onto the list as you get a wonderful view at the top and it's not too far from Ranmore Common either so you can always nip in there afterwards.

Ranmore Common gets another mention here but this time it's the main strech of road which still offers a decent drive and you can then you can swing a right on Critten Lane which joins on to Beech Lane before joining meeting the A24.

This is a great road and has a wonderful hairpin but this road needs caution as sections are very narrow. It is another national speed limit road but because of the surface and visibility you will probably not spend the majority of the road at 60mph.

I suggest entering the road from the south, off  Downs Way. 2 reasons for this. Firstly it allows you to ease yourself into the road as the other entrance starts narrow meaning it can be a bit daunting. Secondly, when you get to the hairpin you have better vision of what is coming the other way so you can enjoy it more.

I've only travelled this road a few times and each time there was quite a bit of traffic. One occasion I even got stuck between an old steam powered tractor! It's got some lovely bends and it's a generally easygoing road.

Enter the road from the A24 Dorking Road and then simply follow the road to Winchester, have a nice pub lunch and then look forward to the trip home!

I once stumbled upon White Hill after I left the flat to clear my head. It was late at night so the road was empty but even during the day you'll find almost no life on this road.

Having said that, you'll still need to be careful as the road does get narrow and some of the bushes are overgrown. If you can get a decent run this road can be thrilling and challenging.

Enter Star Lane from Brighton Road (A23) in Coulsdon and follow it until it merges in to Hogcross Lane and then White Hill.

White Hill then becomes Chipstead Lane where the speed reduces as you hit the other Brighton Road (A217)

If you have any suggestions please let me know!
