What the devil does AEB stand for? Why do What Car? want it fitted as standard? AEB stands for autonomous emergency braking and the idea is that the car will brake for you if you fail to do. This is not uncommon in new cars but isn't always fitted as standard. This handy piece of life saving kit costs from just £40 and the statistics behind the product make this case compelling.
The AEB system is quoted as being able to reduce fatal crashes by upto 25% and injuries by 35%. The system works using a combination of lasers, radars and cameras to detect a potential collision. It will then warn the driver and then if needed, will intervene to apply the brakes and bring the car to a halt if the driver does not respond.
As mentioned earlier, it is standard on some new models whereas it is an optional extras on others. Despite this cutting edge and life saving technology it is reported only 1.6% buyers will tick the box to add it. No, that is not a typo, only 1.6% take up this option. This is what Jim Holder, editorial director of What Car? had to say on this topic: When seatbelts became compulsory for front seat occupants of cars in 1983, the number of drivers killed or seriously injured dropped dramatically, almost overnight. The evidence is irrefutable – AEB saves lives. Just as all new cars now come with stability control, so autonomous emergency braking should be standard fit for all mainstream cars.” On top of this EURO NCAP are even looking to offer manufacturers a high rating if their models are fitted with AEB.
So let's summarise, the stats behind the technology are impressive, the system itself costs from £40 and manufacturers ,may get a higher rating if AEB is fitted as standard. This seems like a no brainer does it not?
