This week Aston Martin announced it's second manufacturing facility which will be situated in St Athan, Glamorgan. This is where they will develop their new crossover the DBX (pictured below) come in 2020 whilst the luxury car brand will build their next generation of sports models in Gaydon, Warwickshire. Gaydon will also be the facility that will produce the all electric RapidE which will start in 2018.
1,000 new jobs will generated thanks to this long term investment across St Athan and Gaydon between now and 2020. The new site sits in 90 acres with construction work starting next year and full vehicle production will start in 2020. St Athan will be the sole production facility for the DBX, a crossover that was first shown last year as a concept. It is predicted that 90% of models sold will be exported to countries such as China and the United States.
The firm's more immediate focus will be on producing the DB11 which will be the replacement for the DB9 which will start at their Gayon site later this year. Over the next 5 years Aston Martin will replace and expand it's entire sports car range and aim to produce 7,000 models a year by 2020.
Dr. Andrew Palmer, CEO of Aston Martin said: “During our 103-year history, Aston Martin has become famous for making beautiful hand-crafted cars in England. Through a detailed evaluation of over 20 potential global locations for this new manufacturing facility, we were consistently impressed with the focus on quality, cost and speed from the Welsh Government team. As a great British company, we look forward to St Athan joining Gaydon as our second centre of hand-crafted manufacturing excellence.”
