We all hate potholes don't we? I hit one on the A27 on Monday and the shock was so bad half my teeth fell out. Well it seems like Perth and Kinross hate fixing them and have tweaked the definitions of what a pothole is to keep costs down in terms of repairs. The council now deem a pothole to be a pothole if it is 2.4 inches deep which is 50% more than what the guidelines stated previously.
This will come as bad news to motorist and is sure to enrage them as this means poorer road surfaces. This is likely to lead to more damaged cars but I suppose it will keep mechanics in work. This also comes at a bad time as the harsh winter has caused the road surfaces to deteriorate than usual.
The RA reports that around 50% of motorists feel that the road surface in their area is poor with 99% saying that potholes and poor road conditions were to blame. Scotland had to pay out £2.7million to motorists between 2009-2014 following damage to cars caused by potholes. RAC spokesperson, Rod Dennis said: “Committing to only fixing larger potholes is a false economy. The larger a pothole becomes, the greater risk it represents to road users and the more costly it becomes to repair. While in the short term the council might save money by repairing only larger potholes, it is saving up an expensive problem for further down the line.”
Have you ever come unstuck by a pothole? It'll be great to hear your tales of woe!
