According to reports, Honda are looking to make an improved NSX which will be aimed at track enthusiasts leading the burning question: Will there be another NSX Type-R? There are even rumours that Honda could opt for a rear wheel system and ditch the hybrid system as well although the project has not been signed off yet. That's not to say it won't happen though as it is thought that their is desire within Honda to go ahead with the project, according to Nick Robinson, dynamic development leader for the NSX project.
The standard NSX weighs 1725kg - although it's far from a slouch - so it would need to go on a diet for it to be considered for a worthy Type-R. For instance, the hybrid system with its electric motors weigh 150 kg so that alone would be a considerable saving. This is most likely why it is thought the Japanese firm could abolish the system for the Type-R.
Commenting on the weight loss needed for the potential Type-R, Robinson said: “There are places weight could be cut out,” adding: “We are Honda so cost [of exotic materials on the regular car] is a consideration, but for a limited edition? Why not?”
The new Honda NSX (standard version) will be in dealerships in the autumn and is said to cost around £130,000. Honda also say that a convertible version on the standard may come at some point but no date has been set yet.
