Mazda have unveiled their new MX-5 RF (retractable fastback) ahead of today's New York International Auto Show. Mazda say it will offer a new dimension to open-top driving as well as making the roadster accessible to a broader range of drivers.
Unqiue Styling
The new MX-5 will feature a swooping roofline, creating a fastback style with a unique rear roof and a retractable rear window. In doing so, the Japanese firm say it will 'deliver a distinctive new convertible feeling.' The new model will be available in Machine Grey, which looks fantastic and I hope Mazda give the option of black wheels as I reckon that would provide a lovely contrast.
The Machine Grey colour has been designed for Mazda's Kodo - Sould of Motion exteriors with the belief that the colour expresses the beauty of the machine's strength and precision. Mazda take paint application seriously, having developed its Takuminuri paint technology to give the impression their cars have been been hand-painted.
What Supplies The Power?
Like the soft-top it will be available with two engines, both of which are called the SKYACTIV-G and come in 1.5 and 2.0 litre guises. These will be made to a six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual gearbox but customers can opt for a six-speed automatic which is exclusive to the RF.
Prices and Availability
The prices have not been announced yet although it is very likely it will cost more than the regular soft-top which is priced at £18,495. So we can probably expect a starting price at over £20,000 and will go on sale in the UK early 2017.
