Reports have emerged that vacuum cleaner powerhouse Dyson are working on a electric car, with James Dyson saying he hasn't 'ruled out' the possibility of the British brand releasing their own car. The UK government leaked the plans by mistake but just a day later the reference in the document was 'cleaned up' so to speak.
The report was uncovered by the Guardian and found that Dyson are receiving funding from the government to develop a new battery electric vehicle in their headquarters. This is reported that this project would see a £174 million investment in the area and could create 5000 jobs. However, the report has now been changed to say that the government is providing a grant of up to £16 million to support research and development battery technology.
Dyson have been hugely successful in the vacuum market and have developed innovative technology, earning the firm a high reputation. But can they do enough to build a successful car? That is yet to be answered but with other companies such as Apple and Google working on building cars, there stands to be no reason that the British firm can't give it a good shot.
