Mazda made history this week as their MX-5 became the first car in history to win both the World Car of the Year award and also the World Car Design of the Year award. The Japanese brand last won the WCOTY award in 2008 with it's Mazda2.
This comes a great news for the firm, who this week unveiled their new MX-5 RF at the New York International Auto Show. The WCOTY award was introduced in 2004 and this year's panel was made up of 73 automotive journalists from 23 countries. The fourth generation MX-5 has picked up over 30 awards since it's release in 2015, including Car of the Year Japan and the UK Car of the Year.
Ikuo Maeda, Mazda’s Executive Officer and General Manager of the Design Division, said, “I’m very proud to accept this award, proof that our designs can connect with people all around the world. Our new-generation lineup has been designed under the KODO-Soul of Motion design philosophy which aims to bring cars to life, and we’ve continually refined the beauty of its forms. Mazda is a proud Japanese brand and, moving forward, we are determined to continue enhancing our designs.”
