After their teaser a few weeks ago, Subaru have officially unveiled their new Impreza, which will be built on their new global platform.
What is Global Platform?
Subaru's global platform is a newly developed chassis from the Japanese firm which will underpin all their future models. It will offer a variety of benefits including better driving dynamics, better safety, better comfort and noise reduction. Subaru have achieved this by improving the rigidity by 70%-100% over their present models. The energy absorption will be better too, making it safer in a crash as well as improvements to the suspension that will offer a more comfortable ride. The platform has also been designed in a way that it can be used for any car, no matter how it is powered.
The new 'Scooby' will come in either a saloon or hatchback, although the 5 door hatchback is currently under consideration for the European market. It will feature their famous 4-cylinder 'Boxer' engine as well as symmetrical all wheel drive and their EyeSight driver assist system. The Eyesight system uses stereo camera technology and is able to read the road ahead, and is able to brake the car if needed to avoid a collision. The Impreza also makes use of adaptive cruise control, lane departure and sway warning, with a lane keep function to assist.
The technology does not stop there though, as in the cabin drivers will be presented with a touch screen infotainment system. The driver can use, or they can they use the voice commands to help control functions such as the sat nav, radio, telephony and so forth.
We will wait and see to whether the Impreza makes it to the UK but I'm sure the demand will be there for the new model.
