A driver, thought to be in his 80s found himself yesterday in trouble after careering into a pond in Suffolk. This comes at a time where the competency of older drivers has been questioned, with 17,000 elderly drivers had their license to drive revoked in 2015 due to medical conditions.
The man had to be pulled out of his Kia Sorento via his sunroof, but thankfully escaped serious injuries despite being understandably shaken up. The driver who has not been named swerved to get out the way of a reversing pick up truck but ended up hitting the throttle rather than the brake pedal. His Sorento flew over a motorbike as a result and landed on its side in the pond.
Once the car hit the water onlookers were quick to rescue, one of which was shopkeeper Robert Earl. Speaking of the incident, he said: "A friend of mine had just parked his motorcycle on the other side of the road and a pick-up truck was reversing back towards the corner.
"An elderly gentleman came round the corner and saw the pick-up truck. He thought he was hitting his brake rather hard. But I think he hit the accelerator because the car took off, went over my friend's motorcycle and over the grass and then flipped into the water."
Earl then commented on the good fortune of the incident, "Just 10 minutes beforehand there was a huge group of people who had brought the cross up and they were singing hymns around the lake. It was really, really lucky the crash hadn't happened then."
