Hitachi and Honda have teamed up to develop a prototype of an innovative alcohol detector that can be integrated into smart keys. The device cannot be tampered with and is able to give a result in just 3 seconds after analysing the vapour from the breath. The device can also provide an ignition interlock on the car to ensure that the car cannot be started if the driver is found to over the limit.
One of the advantages the prototype has other ignition interlock systems is that the test does not have to be conducted in the car, which means that the driver can do it before they get in the vehicle. By doing so this should reduce the temptation drivers may have to even get in the car. Hitachi have developed the sensor that sits in the device and is able analyse vapour from a breath sample. The results will be of a high accuracy, despite the sensor measuring in at just 5mm square, therefore making it ideal to fit into a smart key.
Both companies are hoping to commercialise the product after they have conducted further tests. If the product does become available this could help significantly reduce drink-drive related crimes therefore making the roads a safer place.
