Footage from a speed camera van shows the bizarre and irresponsible moment when a SMOKE GRENADE is thrown out of a moving car. The incident occurred A64 in north Yorkshire on the 6th of September last year, when Jake Sarup, 22, threw the smoke grenade at the van whilst it was parked in the village of Sherburn.
The footage from the van shows Sarup riding as a passenger in a Vauxhall Corsa and he launches the smoke grenade at the van, causing danger to other road users. The police say that visibility was impaired and that this foolish act could have caused 'catastrophic consequences'.
Because of this foolish act Sarup has been sentenced to 12 month community order consisting of 120 hours unpaid, as well as being fined £500 in costs and £60 victim surcharge. Traffic Constable Andy Forth who was present at York Crown Court, commented: "To throw a lit smoke grenade out of a moving vehicle, onto the busy A64 carriageway, was both irresponsible and dangerous.
"It could have resulted in not only a major collision due to the reduction in visibility on the road at that time, but also in damage to property or injury to any other person nearby."
Dave Brown, Traffic Bureau Manager agreed, stating: "This deliberate and irresponsible act could have had catastrophic consequences to innocent road users on the road and the court result imposed reflects that public safety concern."
