Insignia Manages 1,311 On ONE Tank

An Opel Insignia has been driven 1,311 miles from Switzerland to the North Sea, managing averaging 82 mpg. This is better than the the 74.2 mpg quoted by Opel thanks to the Insignia's 1.6 CDTi 'Whisper Silent' engine.

The car was driven by hypermiler (someone who is skilled in efficient driving) Felix Egolf as he started his ambitious voyage from Lucerne, Switzerland on the 6th of April. He drove the 1.6 CDTi 'Whisper Diesel' model which features a manual gearbox and 134 bhp on tap. Egolf drove the car to Opel/Vauxhall HQ in Rüsselsheim, going through the Black Forest along the way.

He went to the HQ to discuss his progress with Christian Müller, Vice President GM Global Propulsion Systems – Europe, befoer hitting the road again towards Münster in North-West Germany.

From there Egolf headed to the coast of the North Sea before making his way back towards Switzerland. On his return trip he passed through Hanover, Kassel and St. Gallen, arriving in Zurich on the 8th of April, all on one tank of diesel.

“I have wanted to crack the 2,000-kilometre milestone for some time now but I couldn’t find the car to do it. The excellent aerodynamics of the Insignia combined with the Eco Contact 5 low-rolling resistance tyres contributed to this outstanding result,” said Felix Egolf.

“This hypermiling tour with the Insignia also shows that anybody can easily equal or better official consumption figures by using foresight when driving and pre-empting the situation ahead.”
