Earlier this week Swedish car firm Volvo announced initial details for its upcoming small car range. The models will be part of the new 40 Series and two concept models have been announced. The 40.1 will be a compact SUV and the 40.2 looks to be a high-riding crossover.
Both models will be the first to be built on Volvo's new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) which has been specifically designed for smaller cars and has allowed its designers explore new directions. I have to say they've done a good job, both models look clean, modern and stylish.
Speaking about the new models, senior vice president Thomas Ingenlth said: “Each member of our product family has its own distinct character, just like the members of a real family. CMA has helped us to capture something special, something youthful in our new concept cars. They have an energy, a disruptive and engaging urban character that makes them stand out among the crowd. This is the flavour of small Volvos to come."
What about power?
But what will power these new models? Details are still not completely known in that regard but battery powered models will be included, as well as Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrains.
Commenting on the power options Dr Peter Mertens, senior vice president of Research & Development said: “By taking a modular approach to both vehicle architecture and powertrain development, we have succeeded in leap-frogging many of the players in the premium segment.
“Our new battery electric powertrain variant opens yet another exciting chapter in the unfolding Volvo story.”
