I've driven a few cars with the EcoBoost engine and I have to say I'm a fan, I love the way Ford have been able to get so much power from such a small unit. It's very clever engineering and it's not just me that has been impressed by it. The small 1.0 three cylinder engine was won the International Engine of the Year award for the 'Best Engine Under 1.0-litre' category for an astonishing fifth year running.
The engine has also picked up three consecutive awards for overall 'Engine of the Year' as well as winning the 'Best New Engine' in 2012. The engine powers eleven Ford models and comes in three power outputs, 99bhp, 123bhp and 138bhp, plus a 178bhp unit is used in the Fiesta R2 Rally Car. It is available in 72 countries worldwide
In 2015 the EcoBoost engine powered almost 1 in 3 Fords purchased and almost half of all Fiesta which highlight the popularity of the small three cylinder unit in the UK. The technology from the EcoBoost has now been used to design and build the new EcoBlue engine which is essentially its diesel counterpart.
“The 1.0-litre EcoBoost was a game-changer, and despite others following our lead, it remains the undisputed benchmark in its class five years on,” said Joe Bakaj, vice president, Product Development, Ford of Europe. “The spirit of innovation continues to drive us as we look to use the same smart thinking for a new breed of efficient, clean and powerful down-sized diesel engines.”
