The new Audi A5 has been revealed with improvements in just about all areas possible. The new models are expected to be available to order towards the end of summer but no price has been released as of yet. A new S5 will also be on its way but won't be here until the winter.
More efficient, but not at the cost of performance
Sometimes efficiency and performance can be exclusive to each other, but that certainly isn't the case in the new A5. Compared to the outgoing model the engines on offer are up to 17% more powerful and up to 22% more fuel efficient. This is thanks to a sleeker body that creates less drag and a 60kg weight loss, making it the lightest in its class.
Five engines will be on offer in the new car, two TFSI petrol units and three TDI diesel units. The power produced from them ranges from 187bhp to 282bhp, but if that isn't quite enough you can opt for the 3.0 litre TFSI V6 in the S5 which delivers a barn-storming 349bhp - 20bhp more than the last model.
The less powerful engines will have gearbox choices of either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed S Tronic and can be specified with front-wheel drive or Quattro all-wheel drive. The 282bhp 3.0 litre TDI and the 3.0 litre 349bhp TFSI S5 engine come with a 8-speed Tiptronic gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive as standard. The Quattro with Ultra technology can also be found on the A5 and is reserved for the four-cylinder TFSI and TDI engines with manual transmission.
More space for passenger and luggage
The new A5 features a longer wheelbase, meaning there is more space inside the cabin for occupants. The level of comfort should be high too, thanks to an all-new chassis which offers optimal comfort whilst still delivering an agile drive. Audi say that the new A5 redefines the class bench mark for aeroacoustics, meaning that the car is quiet inside and is comparable to a luxury class vehicle. There is a little bit more space for luggage too as the A5 offers 465 litres of space, 10 more than the previous model.
Packed with technology
The A5 comes with Audi's Virtual Cockpit which makes its A5 debut and it joined by a whole host of technology and driver aids. You can expect to see your usual mix of Bluetooth and USB connectivity plus you can also take advantage of Audi Connect which makes use a a separate SIM card to connect to the internet.
In terms of driver aids, nearly all of the systems are either new or have been extensively upgraded. The new features include park assist, cross traffic assist rear, exit warning, collision avoidance assist and turn assist. These add to the fuel-saving predictive efficiency assistant, active lane assist and Stop&Go adaptive cruise control including traffic jam assist, which improves driver comfort in slow moving traffic.
