Extra Gear: Week 5

Another episode of Top Gear means one thing, another episode of Extra Gear. Tonight's Top Gear episode set a pretty high bar making it a pretty tough act to follow. So, what featured on tonight's Extra Gear?

Rory Reid lives the high life

Following the test of LeBlanc's test of the Rolls-Royce Dawn Rory Reid pops down to the brand's plant in Goodwood to find out how the cars are made. He selects his colours of choice for 'his' Rolls-Royce before he steps into another that gets tested for water tightness. The car passes and Reid remains as dry as Ghandi's flip-flops which is just as well because if the car had failed it would need to be started from scratch. He then picked up 'his' Dawn and rides of into the sunset. Yeah Rory, you do realise they weren't letting you keep the car? No harm in trying though I suppose.

Ricciardo v Coulthard

After Chris Harris takes the Porsche GT3 RS around the Top Gear test track the other Chris heads to the Olympic Stadium where a top secret race between Daniel Ricciardo and David Coulthard takes place. Ricciardo pilots the Zenos E10S whilst Coulthard is in the old school Caterham 360R. Throughout the film Evans repeats to those present that they "were not there" which becomes increasingly annoying as it progresses. The race itself looks pretty close as both drivers give it their all in the lightweight showdown and I had to say it was tough to pick a winner. I won't spoil it however so I will not tell you the result.

A very special guest

Norman Dewis OBE returns after appearing on Top Gear to feature on Extra Gear as he is driven around the Top Gear track by Rory Reid at a rather leisurely pace in the Jaguar E-Type. The reason for the lack of pace is because the car features no seatbelts and as a result the insurance provided allows Reid to hit a maximum of 60mph. But who cares? The E-Type is moving art so it's a joy to watch no matter what the speed is.

Just as well they couldn't go too fast as Reid's gear changes were far from slick to say the least. The duo return to the studio where they join Chris Harris for a chat about Dewis' extraordinary ventures. The word legend is used too freely but Norman Dewis OBE is a man that deserves such a title. Whoever came up with the idea of getting him on the show deserves a big pat on the back.
