Striking isn’t it? This the new Ford GT ’66 Heritage Edition which replicates the livery used on the Ford GT40 Mark II which was driven to Le Mans victory by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon. There are a few changes though, for example the paintwork is matt which looks pretty good if you ask me, plus the alloys bear a different and a different styled spoiler has been fitted too. If you’re not a fan of the matt finish don’t despair, gloss is also available as an option on the limited edition.
The interior features carbon fibre seats trimmed in ebony leather which bears the Ford GT logo in the headrest – the logo also features on the steering wheel. The ebony leather continues on to the instrument panel, pillars and the headliner plus the steering wheel is wrapped in leather, just like the original. Another styling cue taken from the 1966 model are seatbelts that feature a unique blue webbing.
The story of the Ford GT is a truly interesting story in which Henry Ford came close with clinching a deal with Enzo Ferrari only for Ferrari to pull out at the last minute. Spurred by his anger, Ford set out to build a car that would hit Ferrari where it hurts, the racetrack and from there the Ford GT40 was born. The car fulfilled its purpose as it beat Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966 and then managed the same for the following three years – one of the great stories or motor racing.
It is yet to be announced how much it will cost or how many will be made but 66 would be an appropriate number…
