The automotive industry in the UK has an uncertain future but there is still good news to be found thanks to the latest figures from the SMMT. Last month saw an impressive 26.4% rise in vehicle production compared to may 2015 - 150,802 as opposed to 119,338.
2016 has been a successful year for UK manufacturing so far and the SMMT has encouraged the government to protect the industry following Brexit. The number of cars produced to be exported rose by 27.3% and there was also an impressive rise for cars destined for UK roads with a percentage of 22.7%.
The year-to-date figures remain to see a health growth - 2016 has a 13.6% rise compared to the same point in 2015. UK engine production has also made gains as last month saw a 14.6% rise with 218,674 engines produced.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “May’s performance is another strong month for UK car manufacturing, with demand for British-built vehicles up by over quarter. For this success to continue, we need government to maintain economic stability and help deliver the wider benefits – including free access to our biggest market – which have helped make the sector so globally competitive.”
