Over the last few months details for the Skoda Kodiaq - the brand's first SUV - have been few and far between but today Skoda's lips have become a little looser. The new model will offer the biggest boots in a class and will have the option of a third row of seats. Five engines will be on offer - three TSI petrol and two TDI diesel engines. The picture above is not what the finished product will look like, that's just the snazzy wrap used for testing.
The SUV market is one the most popular at the moment so the Kodiaq has come at a good time but it won't be available to buy until early 2017. The price has not been confirmed as of yet but Skoda has revealed what buyers can expect in regards to technology. The new infotainment system will be powered by Volkswagen's second-generation Modular Infotainment Matrix.
What technology should you expect?
The top infotainment systems are able to offer Wi-Fi hotspots and new mobile online services are also available should the buyer opt to include LTE connectivity. This will enable passengers to browse the web and send emails using their mobile or tablet. Navigation will also be made available as well as Care Connect services which provide breakdown and emergency assistance. Wireless charging will be made available so occupants can charge their smartphones on the go.
Driver assists include Area View cameras which display the surroundings of the car, handy for those moments where the car finds itself in a tight squeeze. Tow Assist helps to manoeuvre the SUV when a trailer attached and at the front there is pedestrian protection systems to improve safety. Parking Distance Control with brake function is a new feature and provides support with parking manoeuvres.
Power and drivetrain
Five engines will be available with the Kodiaq including a 2.0 litre TSI petrol which offers 178bhp. There will be a good level of flexibility as buyers will be able to choose a 6-speed manual gearbox or a DSG setup and power can either be fed to the front wheels or all four wheels. The driving characteristics should be flexible too, thanks to Dynamic Chassis Control which offers a selection of driving modes.
Simply Clever
The Kodiaq lives up to Skoda's 'Simply Clever' philosophy by introducing new concepts such as door-edge protection that deploys automatically to avoid damaging the car in car parks or garages. A sleep comfort package is made available in the new SUV which features headrests designed for long journeys. It looks pretty good on paper but it will have fierce competition including the SEAT Ateca which is also coming soon.
