Peugeot 205 GTI Sale Breaks World Record

The Peugeot 205 GTI is one of the most iconic hot hatches and is considered to be the best, so used examples can be a bit pricey – especially when the condition of the specimen is of a high order. This certainly rings true for the example recently sold at the latest sale at Silverstone Auctions which has now set a new world record for a 205 GTI sale.

How much might you pay for a pristine 205 GTI? £10,000? £15,000? £20,000? Well I’m afraid you still would have come short – this 1989 1.9 205 GTI sold for a wallet-emptying £30,938. That’s £12,000 more than its estimate and about the same amount of money as a brand new Ford Focus RS!

The interior looks fresh from the showroom

This retro pocket rocket is described as having body that is free from any damage and there are no panel gaps or moisture on the lights to be found either. The inside is immaculate and looks like it’s fresh from the 80s, although the tyres are the originals and will need to be replaced. I just hope the new owner actually enjoys the car rather than just hiding it away in a garage for occasional use.

The car itself has covered only 7,986 miles in its 27 year lifespan so it’s safe to say this is very low mileage example. As much as I love hot hatches, I cannot imagine paying over £30,000 for a 205 GTI, no matter how pristine it is. What do you think, do you think this is a solid buy or do you think the buyer overpaid?

The alloys are free from scuffs but the original Pirelli tyres will need to be replaced
